Grand Opening: The Mill On North Food Hall

On April 24, The Mill on North, a seven-vendor food hall in West Baltimore, an area long known as a food desert, was packed for its grand opening, complete with words from Baltimore officials and a cheerful ribbon-cutting ceremony. The 7,800-square-foot food hall comes courtesy of Coppin Heights Community Development Corporation, Neighborhood Housing Services of Baltimore, and the West North Avenue Development Authority.

Federal, state and local dignitaries joined community leaders Thursday for the grand opening of The Mill on the North, a new food hall located at 2636 West North Avenue, just steps from Coppin State University. The 7,500-square-foot space features six vendors and a bar, offering new options in an area long considered a food desert.

Culinary Hub Opens in West Baltimore

The Mill on North Food Hall hosted its official grand opening on April 24 with community members, leaders and city officials in attendance. The packed celebration brought to life the collaborative vision behind the initiative - a community-led, community-owned space that offers delicious foods from six local vendors and plenty of spaces to connect with the community.

When you think of West Baltimore, or West North Avenue specifically, images of disinvestment might come to mind. But The Mill On North Food Hall represents a new chapter - neighbors gathering over good food and drink, brand-new apartments rising from former vacant lots, and West Baltimoreans investing in their own community.

West Baltimore's First Food Hall Rises on North Avenue

Early in 2023, a roster of seven food businesses will help address West Baltimore's dining dearth with the launch of The Mill on North, a 7,800-square-foot food hall at Walbrook Mill. Ground broke on the project in June 2022 and construction is projected to finish in the spring, with development partners including Coppin Heights Community Development Corporation, Osprey Property Co., and Neighborhood Housing Services.

The Mill Food Hall Receives National Economic Development Award

The Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development has been nationally recognized, receiving a 2025 Excellence in Economic Development Award on Sept. 15 from the International Economic Development Council for its support of The Mill on North Food Hall in West Baltimore's Coppin Heights neighborhood.

The Mill on North: A Place to Gather, Enjoy, and Eat in West Baltimore

When families in West Baltimore want to sit down and enjoy a meal together at a nice restaurant, they're forced to travel outside of their community just to find a place. NHS of Baltimore's latest economic development project, The Mill on North, is a food hall that will provide a much-needed variety of dining options to residents of West Baltimore.

A Big Opportunity Comes Into View

An area of West Baltimore long neglected, despite having a potential anchor for growth in Coppin State, appears to be finally getting some redevelopment traction. The vacant rowhouses are gone. The old mill is gone. And the block immediately to the west of Coppin State is getting a big lift with the Walbrook Mill apartments and retail complex.

CHCDC Buys Hebrew Asylum for Rehabilitation

The effort to restore Baltimore's Hebrew Orphan Asylum took a big step forward when Coppin State University and the University of Maryland agreed to sell the property to the Coppin Heights Community Development Corporation. The CDC is planning a $12.4 million rehabilitation and to open the building in December 2015 as the Center for Healthcare and Healthy Living.
